Why We Officiate…

Author takes a moment to impart some key tips with a pair of 1st grade hoopsters.

“Hello all –
Just a quick thank you to the officials. This gentleman (and his colleague) did a wonderful job balancing teaching” the kids with calling a fair game today. They both took time to provide individual instruction and help these kids learn while fostering a competitive environment and love of the game. Kudos!”

There are probably many different reasons why you sign up to work youth league basketball games in your local area.  I think this is a good time of the season to reflect on one of the most important:  to support the great game of basketball and the young players who hold the future of the game.  Never refer to yourself as JUST a youth basketball official.  You never know who’s watching what you do, measuring the impact you have on the lives of those who play the game.  Don’t dilute the significance of your role as an official.  It’s an important contribution to your community.

I’ve already spent most of what I’ve been paid to officiate…so that’s a motivating factor too.  But if that was the only reason, I would have quit long before now.  After 35 years, the email below represents the most valuable reimbursement for the time and resources I’ve invested to be an official.  I hope you have the privilege of enjoying this reward as well during your career.

This note above was sent to the Director of Prairie Trail Sports Complex in Ankeny, Iowa regarding our work as officials last Sunday.  The photo was taken during a 1st grade boys’ game.  This picture could be any of you.  You make a difference.  Thanks for what you do.
